Frequently Asked Questions

Is it legal for women in India to carry self-defence tools like pepper spray and personal alarms?

Yes, it is legal for women in India to carry self-defence tools like pepper spray and emergency alarms. They are classified as non-lethal self-defence products, not weapons under the Arms Act, 1959 — so no licence, registration, or age verification is required to purchase them. Your right to self-defence is also protected under Sections 34 to 44 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, permitting reasonable, proportionate force to protect yourself from an imminent threat.

The one important exception is air travel: both pepper spray and alarms with batteries face restrictions on flights, so do check airline rules before flying.

Who should consider carrying personal safety products?

Honestly, anyone who feels they would like an extra layer of confidence, not just women in "risky" situations. We hear from college students, night-shift professionals, solo travellers, daily metro commuters, gig workers, mothers running errands, senior citizens living alone, and even teenagers heading to tuition. Personal safety isn't about expecting the worst; it's about being prepared so you can go about your day without that low-level anxiety in the back of your mind.

Pepper spray or personal alarm — which one should I pick?

They actually do two very different jobs, and many of our customers carry both.

  • A pepper spray is a response tool. It physically incapacitates an attacker by causing a strong burning sensation, tearing, and breathing difficulty for around 45 minutes — buying you the seconds you need to run.

  • A personal alarm is a prevention and attention tool. It blares a 130 dB siren (louder than a chainsaw) and flashes an LED light to draw attention from people around you and startle a would-be attacker before anything escalates.

If you're often in isolated or quiet spots (parking lots, stairwells, jogging trails), an alarm is invaluable. If you commute through unpredictable public spaces, a pepper spray gives you a stronger stop. Most safety-conscious users keep an alarm on their keychain and a spray in their bag.

What are some practical safety habits I should build alongside carrying a self-defence product?

A safety product is one layer. Your habits are another. A few that genuinely make a difference:

  • Share your live location with a trusted contact during late commutes (WhatsApp, Google Maps, or your cab app).
  • Save 112 (national emergency), 1091 (women's helpline), and 100 (police) on speed dial.
  • When booking a cab, read out the vehicle number on a call (real or pretend) so the driver knows someone has the details.
  • Walk with purpose (head up, phone away), especially through unfamiliar stretches.
  • Trust your gut. If something feels off, step into a shop, an ATM, or any well-lit public space and wait it out.

Keep your safety product accessible, not buried at the bottom of your bag. A pocket clip or keychain attachment is the whole point.

Will I need training to use these products?

No, you do not need any training to use these products. Both these products are designed for situations where you have seconds, not minutes. So they're built for instinctive, one-handed use. That said, we strongly recommend doing a "dry run" once you receive your product: hold it, feel the trigger or pin, practise pulling it out from where you'd actually carry it. The first time you use it shouldn't be in an emergency.

Are these products safe to store if I have children or pets at home?

Yes, these products are safe to store if you have children or pets at home. But only with the same common sense you'd apply to medicines or sharp objects. Pepper spray should be stored upright, away from heat, and well out of reach of children. The emergency alarm is harmless except for its loud sound, but the 130 dB siren can damage hearing on prolonged close exposure. So keep it away from curious little fingers.

How does the Impower pepper spray work?

When sprayed on the attacker's face, the formula of Impower Pepper Spray triggers an intense burning sensation, heavy tearing, coughing, breathing difficulty, and a runny nose for around 45 minutes. It does not cause permanent harm or unconsciousness. It simply overwhelms the senses long enough for you to get away to safety.

What's inside the pepper spray’s formula?

Impower Pepper Spray contains oleoresin capsaicin (a natural irritant derived from chillies), a green-chilli-based flavoured irritant, and compressed gas as the propellant. It's a non-lethal formula.

How far does it spray, and how do I use it correctly?

Impower Pepper Spray has a 12-foot range, so you don't need to be close to your attacker. The right technique is as follows:

  • Close your eyes and cover your nose and mouth with your free hand to avoid self-exposure.
  • Stretch your spraying arm out fully and aim at the attacker's face.
  • Spray for 2-3 seconds.
  • Turn away immediately, run, and reach a safe, public place. Call for help.

What if the wind blows the pepper spray back on me?

This is why we recommend the closed-eyes, covered-face technique. If some blowback does occur, move to fresh air and safety immediately. If possible, rinse the affected area with cool water (not warm, and no soap), and do not rub your eyes. The effects will fade on their own.

What's the shelf life of Impower Pepper Spray?

Impower Pepper Spray stays effective for up to 2 years from its manufacturing date. The propellant gradually loses pressure over time, so we recommend replacing it once it crosses that mark, even if unused.

Can I carry the spray in my handbag, college bag, or office tote every day?

Absolutely, you can carry the Impower Pepper Spray in your handbag, college bag, or office tote every day. The pocket clip and compact form enable it to slip into a side pocket, glove compartment, or be directly clipped onto a bag strap easily for one-second access.

How loud is the Impower Emergency Alarm, and why does loudness matter?

The Impower Emergency Alarm emits a 130 dB siren, which is roughly comparable to a jet engine at close range. At that volume, it's almost impossible to ignore. It draws attention from people within a wide radius and disorients the attacker, often making them retreat before anything escalates. Most assaults rely on isolation and silence, which is exactly what the alarm disrupts.

How do I activate and silence the emergency alarm?

Pull the contact pin to activate — the siren and LED light start immediately. To silence it, simply reinsert the pin back into the device. That's it. No buttons, no app, no setup.

How long does the alarm’s battery last?

The Impower Emergency Alarm’s battery typically lasts 8 to 9 months of standby life with normal use, and the alarm can blare continuously for up to 1.5 hours on a single battery without interruption. When the sound starts weakening or stops, it's time for replacement.

Is the alarm waterproof? Can I use it in the rain or attach it to my gym bag?

The Impower Emergency Alarm is not waterproof, so avoid direct exposure to rain or moisture. That said, it's compact and light enough to tuck into a bag pocket or inner zip, where it stays accessible but protected.

Can children, teenagers, and senior citizens use the alarm?

Yes, the children, teenagers, and senior citizens can easily use the alarm. There's no skill, force, or aim required: just one pull of the pin. It's especially useful for school-going children, college students walking back to hostels, and elderly family members who live alone or take walks early in the morning.

Can I gift these products to a friend, sister, or daughter heading to college?

Many of our customers do exactly that, and we think it's one of the most thoughtful gifts you can give to your loved ones.
